KEENER ARCHITECTURAL INTRODUCES CASEWORK FOR GREEN BUILDINGS

6/23/09 – Local manufacturer supports projects applying for LEED certification

Keener Architectural Casework, a division of Keener Kitchen Manufacturing Co., recently launched a line of commercial casework, countertops and accessories designed specially for owners, architects, and commercial contractors seeking green certification under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating system of the U.S. Green Building Council.

Core cabinets and countertop materials contain 100% recycled or recovered content, and no added urea formaldehyde. Laminate countertop materials contain 22% post-consumer content, no added urea formaldehyde, and are GreenGuard certified. In addition, hardwood accessories available from Keener contain 100% regional materials. Each of these initiatives supports a project’s application for green certification.

Keener’s commercial division is part of a national trend in green construction, estimated to be 20% to 25% of new construction starts by 2013, with a value of $56 - $70 billion, according to a recent study by McGraw-Hill Construction. In additional to the desire to reduce environmental impacts, driving the trend to green construction is the strong business case for green shared by senior corporate leaders, who believe green buildings provide lower operating costs (58%), foster innovation (57%), help attract and retain talented employees (44%), and improve their company’s financial performance (31%), according to the same McGraw-Hill study.

Locally, Kinsley Construction and Keener have partnered on an addition to the Gettysburg College Center for Athletics, Recreation and Fitness, with Keener supplying casework and countertops for a reception area, juice bar, and restrooms. Keener is also working with Henderson Construction of York on the First Capital Credit Union currently under construction at the intersection of Leader Heights Road and South Queen Street in York. Both projects have applied for green certification.
